Weight Loss vs. Fat Loss — What’s the Difference?

This is Coach Alex, and I wanted to share a quick note about something I hear often — weight loss vs. fat loss.

A lot of people tell me they want to lose weight, and that’s a fantastic goal! But here’s something important to know: weight loss and fat loss aren’t the same thing.

For example, I could lose a few pounds by losing muscle mass, even while gaining body fat, and the scale would still show that I’ve “lost weight.” That’s because muscle weighs more than fat. The scale only tells us one thing: how much our body weighs in total.

Our InBody scale, on the other hand, tells a much deeper story. It breaks down your body composition, showing how much of your weight comes from muscle, fat, and water.

When I talk with clients (and even locals interested in joining our gym), the #1 goal I hear is “I want to lose weight.” But after digging a little deeper, what most people really want is to feel more confident, get stronger, and look leaner.

Here’s the truth: getting stronger and getting leaner isn’t the same as losing weight.

To build strength and a lean physique, you need to increase muscle mass and lower body fat percentage, which comes from consistent resistance training and solid nutrition habits.

So if your goal is to “lose weight,” take a moment to ask yourself:
–  Am I trying to just see a smaller number on the scale?
–  Or am I trying to change what my body is made of, building muscle while reducing fat?

If you’re curious about your own body composition, we’d love to help!
