What’s a Good Training Program?

Here’s some thoughts on what should go into an exercise routine that maximizes your enjoyment, results, and longevity.

Anything you enjoy and do is better than nothing.

Showing up is the most important thing.

Then, you want to try move as well as you can. What does this mean? Keeping your spine safe, moving from your core, and bringing your joints through as full a range of motion as possible.

After you’ve started showing up and are trying to move as well as possible, see how much you have in the tank any given day so you get the most in return.

It’s good to lift heavy, but you don’t need to lift heavy every day. It’s good to run, but you don’t need to run if you can do another form of cardio and get some impact work in. It’s good for your shoulders to hang from a bar, and it’s good to challenge your coordination, balance and accuracy as well as get a good sweat on.

You also want variety in your movements. Why? The more you safely ask of your body, the greater its capacity is to adapt to any unforeseen challenges, and the longer your health span.

Variety can be in the reps you do, the order you do them in, the weights you pick, when you train, the length of your workouts and rest periods.

With that in mind, remember that more training isn’t always better and you can have too much of a good thing. Play around to find the ideal number of sessions per week that work for you, and note that it can change like everything else in training.

Finally, all these things are best done with people in a supportive, friendly and fun environment.
